Hand-woven orgies, embroidered threesomes and delicately cross-stitched smut; Brisbane-based Leah Emergy takes vintage pornography, subverts its lewd connotations, and reconstructs the imagery into pixelated and highly-textured cross-stitch works, just like nanna would have made... and yet very much not.
"This project came about when I was working as a 3D modeller in video game development and I was emailed some particularly explicit spam. I filed it away into an innocuously named decoy folder until I had the revelations that a beautifully discordant way to explore the unsolicited images was through cross-stitch."
"One of the reasons I don't shy away from the depicting sexual acts is as a protest against increasing conservatism of the mainstream. There have been so many cultural advances in sexual openness that it pains me to see this progress being stripped back. The scenes are a voyeuristic invitation to normalise public discussion around topics of sexual intimacy."
