Mark Chu is a self-taught painter whose work focuses on human faces. Chu's subjects are diverse, spanning from those he knows personally, imagined figures, public figures, himself, to those approaching him in the street. Non-realistic colour and altered forms occur to evoke works of a psychological nature. Chu has shown work in New York, Atlantic City, Shanghai and Amsterdam, and has had work photographed for the New York Times.
Chu's painting is informed by his background in other cultural forms: in his teens, Chu recorded with the MSO and WASO as a solo pianist, and later was a restaurant reviewer for The Age Good Food Guide. Chu holds an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University. In 2019, Chu will take a residency at the Q Bank Gallery in Tasmania.
